2-alarm fire guts East Vancouver house

Crews battled a blaze in East Vancouver.

Firefighters are still putting out hot spots after a two-alarm blaze gutted a vacant East Vancouver house this morning.

The Vancouver Fire Department received reports of a house fire on Commercial Street and East 22nd Avenue at around 3:30 a.m. By the time they arrived, flames had spread throughout the building and were threatening other properties. Crews were able to contain the blaze before it spread to the homes next door.

No word yet if the fire is considered suspicious.

Neighbours say the house has been empty for more than a year, but that they have seen squatters there in the past.

A separate fire kept crews busy overnight. Firefighters were called to deal with a set of flaming hedge on Kingsway near Nanaimo Street late last night. There is no official word yet on what caused that fire, but witnesses say they heard fireworks being set off nearby just before flames broke out.
