Blue Jays fans show team spirit in Saskatoon

SASKATOON – As the Toronto Blue Jays continue the quest for its first World Series title in 22 years, fans in Saskatoon have come down with a serious case of Jays fever. Chris Beaudry is planning to get a tattoo of the iconic Jose Bautista bat flip that clinched the American League Division Series. He’s had body art of other teams, but the bat flip is his first homage to the Jays.

“It’s going to be something that’s played over and over for 20 years. But I don’t like things that are just normal, so I’m going to mix in the Jays mascot with it – make it look a bit crazy,” Beaudry said.

Clients that would typically look for a Saskatchewan Roughriders tattoo this time of year seem to have switched to Jays tattoos, according to Tracey Grand’Maison, co-owner of Pic-Man Tattoo in Saskatoon.

“We’ve been open since 1997 and this is the first year I’ve ever heard of Jays tattoos coming through,” Grand’Maison said.

The Blue Jays opened the American League Championship Series Friday night, visiting the Kansas City Royals in a best-of-seven series.

A Toronto win would also be celebrated with a different kind of art – a painting at the Glen Scrimshaw Gallery. With every victory, the gallery is marking down the price of a painting featuring the namesake bird.

“If they keep winning, we will keep discounting and it’s possible this painting may end up free at the end, if they go all the way,” said Joyce Hansen, manager of the Saskatoon gallery.

Jerseys, hats t-shirts and other gear have been flying off the shelves at Olympian Sports.

“We can’t get it in fast enough and the manufacturers and companies can’t produce it fast enough,” said Donnie Hood, a sales associate at the store.

Toronto trailed the Texas Rangers two games to none, before winning three straight to take the ALDS.
