Saskatoon city councillors approve free transit for election day

SASKATOON – If you’re looking for a way to get to the polls on Oct. 19, a new option is available in Saskatoon. At a special meeting Tuesday morning, city council voted unanimously to make Saskatoon Transit free for the entire day.

The purpose is to help those who do not own vehicles take part in the democratic process.

Although the intention is to get people to and from their polling stations, residents are able to ride free of charge for any purpose. The idea was proposed by Coun. Darren Hill.

“No one is going to question you, you just hop on the bus. You could be going to work, you could be going to university, or you could be going to vote,” said Hill.

“Hopefully, we see an increase in those numbers of people that are going to vote.”

City officials estimate there will be $13,000 in lost revenue to provide free transit for the day.
