Residents take ADM, Transport Canada to court over Dorval golf course

MONTREAL – A coalition of residents in Dorval is taking Aéroports de Montréal (ADM) and Transport Canada to court over plans to destroy the Dorval Municipal Golf Course.

“The continuing annihilation of our green spaces on the island, together with the heritage value of this site in particular, merits the full protection accorded by the law,” stated Bruce Orr, one of the plaintiffs in the proceedings against the ADM.

The residents alleged that the ADM is acting as a real estate promoter while at the same time refusing to respect zoning laws and the environmental protection statutes of both Quebec and Canada.

They insisted that the golf course does not form part of the ADM’s airport mandate, claiming there is already a lot of vacant land available in the adjacent industrial park, as well as at Mirabel.

The Dorval Save the Green Space Coalition Group also emphasized the importance of a buffer zone created by the golf course, which separates hundreds of homes from the airport.

“We only have to look at the Lac-Mégantic disaster and the recent explosions in China to understand that a buffer zone is absolutely essential for the safety of our families,” added Orr.

The motion for injunction will be presented before the Superior Court on Nov. 17.
