Students launch petition to bring back grad banquets

REGINA – Regina Public School Board’s decision to scrap graduation banquets is being met with resistance from students, who have now launched a petition.

The online petition calls on the board to bring back the banquet and invite students and parents to be part of the process of reducing the financial burden associated with the celebration.

As of Wednesday at 5 p.m., over 1,400 people have signed it and around 300 of those have left comments of support.

The petition was organized by Braedon Lowey, a grade 12 student at Balfour Collegiate.

“It doesn’t seem like they tried to come up with any solutions, rather they just tried to remove the problem,” Lowey said. “That’s what students and other community members are upset about.”

Lowey said many of the comments present potential solutions to the board’s concerns about some people being excluded due to cost. One option that keeps coming up is the ability to fundraise.
