One man is dead and another is in critical condition following a crash on the Nanaimo Parkway.

Traffic analysts and investigators are trying to figure out how an SUV ended up on the other side of the road.

The crash happened around 10 p.m. last night between Northfield and Mostar Roads.

Mounties say a man going south in an SUV somehow crossed the centre line and ended up in the northbound lanes.

He hit a sports car and the man who was driving that vehicle died at the scene.

The parkway was closed for several hours, but has since reopened.

Police don’t suspect alcohol played a factor, but the investigation is ongoing.
