REGINA – A Saskatchewan farm boy made his Broadway debut Thursday as the star of the new production of “Jesus Christ Superstar.”
Paul Nolan says the New York stage is a long way from his hometown of Roleau, Sask.
“This is going to make the farmers shake their heads, but I get up about 10:30, 11 o’clock,” chuckles Nolan, describing his daily routine.
But he’s happy for the support he’s received from the folks at home and is thrilled his mother and father got the chance to be there at the Neil Simon Theatre for opening night.

“It makes the whole thing mean something,” he says. “If I didn’t have someone to share my successes with, it wouldn’t mean anything.”
Nolan has been playing the titular role in the musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice since it was a hit in the 2011 season at the Stratford Festival.
“Not only have I been with this cast for this show for a year, it’s a company of actors that most of us have worked together a lot for the last five years in Stratford,” he says.
New York is a new experience for Nolan, who says the audiences there know their theatre.
“This city is a whole different animal than any other place I could imagine working.”
