Calgary police charge five men in connection with tainted ecstasy; confirm 9th PMMA death

Police are confirming Calgary’s ninth death in connection with tainted ecstasy.

A 51-year-old man died in February after being found in medical distress at a southwest home.

Toxicology results have confirmed his death was PMMA-related.

Police also announced on Thursday, that ecstasy seized in three recent cases in Calgary is confirmed to contain deadly PMMA.

Calgary police say they seized LSD and ecstasy from a man arrested on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012. James Wellesley Briscoe, 21, of Bragg Creek is now facing seven drug-related charges.

Just days later on Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, police seized ecstasy and cocaine from two men arrested in the 4600 block of Richard Road S.W. A 22-year-old man and Brody Thomas Stephenson, 20, both of Calgary are charged with possession of ecstasy for the purpose of trafficking.

The 22-year-old entered a guilty plea in court and received a $1,500 fine.

Then on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012, police seized ecstasy from two men after executing search warrants on two northwest homes and a vehicle stopped on memorial drive. Andrew Tafara Gray, 32, and Rudolph Vincent Lopez, 31, both of Calgary are charged with trafficking ecstasy.

Police say ecstasy seized from all five men contained PMMA, so they’re taking the uncommon step of releasing photos of the accused to the public.
