Alberta Progressive Conservatives appoint new candidate for Lacombe-Ponoka

LACOMBE, Alta. – The Alberta Progressive Conservatives have appointed a civic politician to carry the party flag in the riding of Lacombe-Ponoka in the upcoming provincial election.

Lacombe Mayor Steve Christie will replace Ray Prins, who announced Tuesday that he would not be running after representing the central Alberta riding for two terms.

In a letter to the constituency, Prins said the controversy over how members of the legislature are paid for committee work had become intolerable.

Members of a committee he chaired were paid $1,000 per month for their work, even though the committee hasn’t held a meeting for more than three years.

Christie says he loves being mayor, but the opportunity to run for the Tories was too good to pass up.

He says some voters in the riding are upset about some issues, and expects the campaign to hold the riding will be tough. (CKGY, CHUB)
