The Safeway Championship ceases to exist

WINNIPEG — The Manitoba Men’s provincial curling championship is getting a makeover.

Curl Manitoba has announced that after 21 years the men’s provincial tankard is getting a new title sponsor.

The event was first dubbed the Safeway Select back in 1995 and eventually morphed into the Safeway Championship through the 2015 provincials.

The bonspiel was first held in 1925 and was originally called the MacDonald Brier. It was then known as the British Consols, followed by the Labatt Tankard, before switching to the Safeway Select.

The new title sponsor for the event which decides the top men’s team in Manitoba will be introduced at a media conference on October 7. The 2016 championship runs from February 9-14 in Selkirk.
