TSX, loonie rally as economy shows signs of turnaround

TORONTO – North American stock markets were showing strong gains Wednesday by mid-day.

The Toronto Stock Exchange’s S&P/TSX composite index was up 187.44 points at 13,224.40. On Tuesday, the index gained 32 points after see-sawing for most of the day.

In New York, the Dow Jones average of 30 stocks was up 206.08 at 16,257.21 while the broader S&P 500 index advanced 27.49 points to 1,911.58 and the Nasdaq index gained 78.97 points to 4,596.29.

The loonie was up 0.10 of a U.S. cent at 74.63 cents US. On the commodity markets, oil fell 12 cents to US$45.11 a barrel.
