Rare Harris Hawk sighted in Langley

Have you seen this Harris Hawk in Langely?. Cos van Wermeskerken

A rare Harris Hawk has been spotted in Langley and his owner would like the public’s help to get him home.

The hawk, which is native to the southwestern United States and rarely seen in the wild in Canada, was last spotted at Brydon Lagoon in Langley on Sept. 19.

Antoni Podszywa, who owns the bird, says he has seen him a few times since he got out, but has yet to catch him. “He’s three years old, very well-trained, and was working on a blueberry field to scare starlings away,” he says.

“He’s a very good hunter so he’s probably hunting for himself.”

Podszywa says the bird does not have a transmitter on his leg, so he can’t track the hawk, but it does have a bell and leg straps.

“The most important thing is not to feed the bird,” he says. “He’ll just steal the food and escape.”
