Truck driver charged in Sask. teens death makes court appearance

A Winnipeg truck driver charged in a crash that killed three teenagers from Carrot River, Sask. had his case adjourned until later next month. Normand Mark Joseph Lavoie, 38, did not enter a plea during a brief court appearance Tuesday in Melfort provincial court.

Lavoie is facing three counts of criminal negligence causing death after the teens were killed on May 3 when their car was rear-ended by a northbound semi-tractor trailer in a Highway 6 construction zone approximately five kilometers south of Spalding.

Their car was then pushed into a truck, which hit a 21-year-old flag person from British Columbia. The truck crossed the highway and struck a construction vehicle.

Justin Gaja, 14, Kristian Skalicky, 15, and Carter Stevenson, 17, died at the scene.

A flag person, Sam Fetherson, was taken to Saskatoon’s Royal University Hospital in critical condition.

The drivers of the truck, the construction vehicle and the semi weren’t seriously hurt.

Lavoie, who is also charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm, is expect to enter a plea at his next court appearance whicc is scheduled for Oct. 20.
