EDMONTON – At 2:21 a.m. on Wednesday morning fall officially begins.
The summer numbers are in, and this summer was the hottest Edmonton has seen in 30 years.
Here’s a look at how the sizzling stats break down.
Average day time temperatures were compared to the past 30 years. This year, the average day time high was 23.2°C. That beats out 1998 and 2012 at 23.1°C, and 2009 at 23°C.
This year, Alberta Health Services issued heat advisories two times. The city saw 38 days of temperatures above 25°C, and eight days of temperatures above 30°C.
The hottest day of the summer was July 9 when the thermometer hit 34.1°C.
In terms of precipitation, Edmonton was well below the 30-year summer average,- seeing just 75 per cent of normal rainfall totals. August was the driest month, with less than a third as much rainfall as July, and a third of what we have seen so far in September.
The very strong El Ninõ conditions that contributed to this summer’s heat are forecast to last into the fall and winter of 2016. Experts predict that conditions will stay warmer than normal, but will not necessarily stay drier in the coming months.
