August 2015 second-hottest August Edmonton has seen in 20 years

EDMONTON — If you’ve been thinking this month has been warmer than normal, you’re not wrong.

This August was the second-hottest August on record in Edmonton over the past 20 years.

This month, the average daily high in Edmonton was 24.53°C. The last time Edmonton experienced a higher average temperature in August was in 1998, when the average daily high was 24.57°C.

The temperature hit a high of 25°C or warmer 14 times this month in Edmonton, which ties the numbers from August 2003.

In 1998 and 1999, Edmonton’s daily high during August reached 25°C or warmer 15 times.

The 30-year average high temperature (1981-2010) for August in Edmonton is 22.6°C, according to Global Edmonton Chief Meteorologist Jesse Beyer.

Beyer said the 30-year average rainfall (1981-2010) for August in Edmonton is 61.8mm, and this year the city saw just 16.6mm.

Both August 1998 and August 2015 were during El Niño years, according to Global Edmonton weather specialist Margeaux Morin.
