REGINA – Regina police say businesses and shoppers should be on the look out for counterfeit cash after fake bills were passed to some local businesses.

The bills in question are replicas of new (polymer series) $50 and $100 bills. Fakes can be spotted in several ways:

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.
  • The small numbers in the transparent window on the new bills should match the bill denomination (recently passed fakes do not have these numbers)
  • The transparent window should feel smooth with the rest of the bill (recently passed fakes have tape on the window)

Consumers and businesses are reminded that anyone can refuse to accept a suspicious bill.

Businesses are asked to call 911 for an immediate response if they suspect counterfeit money has been passed and to note as much suspect information as possible. Suspicious bills should be handled as little as possible and stored in an envelope.
