EDMONTON – A new addition has opened at the Royal Alexandra Hospital to help children receiving mental health treatment.
The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation Family Room is designed to provide pediatric mental health patients and their families with a welcoming place to spend time while at the hospital.
The hockey-themed room includes murals of the Oilers dressing room and a floor that mimics a hockey rink. Families will be able to stay in the room as they await admission, and includes space where parents can meet with clinicians.

“The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation Family Room provides a colourful, quiet and relaxing environment for our families,” said Mark Snaterse, executive director of Addiction and Mental Health at Alberta Health Services.
“It is a wonderful space that will make treatment and education more enjoyable and effective for the families we serve.”
The room is located in the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit. About 400 children access mental health services every year at the Royal Alex, which provides inpatient care and follow-up treatment.

Funding for the family room was provided by the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation.
