Regina General Hospital welcomes primary care robot

REGINA – Saskatchewan is at the cutting edge when it comes to piloting robotic technology in primary health care and Regina General Hospital is the latest facility to welcome a robot.

PeTIr (pronounced Peter) has been used primarily in neurosurgery at the RGH. Surgeons in high demand have been able to remotely watch surgeries and provide input.

The technology allows doctors to remotely talk with patients, check vital signs and make decisions about their care. PeTIr is also going to used in emergency and pediatric care.

“In my mind, this technology is unstoppable,” said Dr. Ivar Mendez, head of the University of Saskatchewan’s surgery department. “It’s actually going to happen and it’s going to be like the cell phone and the internet. In the future we’re going to be using this technology for all types of medical care.”

This is the fourth robot in Saskatchewan: there’s another one in Saskatoon and two others in remote communities.
