Woodlands neighbourhood in North Vancouver has a new way of fighting fires

The Woodlands neighbourhood in the District of North Vancouver is breathing a sigh of relief.

Despite being near the water, for years the fire department has had no access to the district’s water supply.

If left unchecked long enough, a wildfire could easily spread through the densely wooded area in Deep Cove.

That, combined with the labyrinth of single-lane roads and steep rock-faced slopes, has concerned fire crews for years.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

But now, there’s a solution.

They’ve turned a fire boat into a pump that will deliver water to a fire truck on land, connected by a long hose that goes up the rocky slope.

“There’s still a lot of things that can happen when you’re in the darkness and rain…[but] the more we come out here, the better,” said District of North Vancouver Fire and Rescue Assistant Chief Jim Bonneville, who led a practice drill with the boat today.

“We had a fire here a few years back, and it resulted in a small forest fire…but it’s a big concern for everybody.

“In light of this past summer, it kind of puts it all into focus.”
