MONTREAL – Four former Quebec premiers – all lawyers – have co-written a letter in support of the Quebec Bar association‘s decision to suspend its president.

Lucien Bouchard, Bernard Landry, Daniel Johnson et Pierre-Marc Johnson wrote in the letter published Tuesday by Droit Inc., a lawyer’s publication, they want to protect the credibility of the bar, the dignity of all its members and maintain the public’s confidence in the institution.

The association’s board of directors suspended Lu Chan Khuong July 1 after it was revealed in the media she had been the subject of a shoplifting complaint in April 2014 at a clothing store.

She was never charged for the alleged shoplifting incident and the matter was dealt with non-judicially at the time.

Khuong’s is fighting her suspension in court and her case is expected to be heard beginning Oct. 5.

Quebec Superior Court denied her request for reinstatement last week.
