‘I didn’t want to let my ribs burn’: Man rescues slab of BBQ ribs during late night fire

WATCH: News cameras captured a passionate interview with a man who rescued his family and his BBQ ribs from a fire.

Robert Wright really loves his barbecue.

In a Tuesday morning interview captured by Fox affiliate KMPH News after a fire ripped through one apartment in a complex in Fresno, California, next-door neighbour Robert Wright spoke passionately about rescuing his family and his ribs when he noticed the flames.

He said it was around 3 a.m. when he started to feel hungry, so he threw a rack of ribs and some hot links onto his barbecue. That’s when the fire next door broke out.

“I was barbecuing, man, and I seen some fire just come out the window, man, and the window busted out,” he said. “Only thing I think first, man, ‘Make sure them ribs is right’ and I ran over and got my family, man.”

Wright said he carried out his family to safety before he went to rescue his ribs.

“First thing, I got my kids. Then I thought about my ribs. I didn’t want to let my ribs burn and stuff, ‘cause I take pride in what I do,” he said while proudly holding up a glistening rack of ribs.

Wright’s audacious post-fire rescue interview has sparked gleeful online response, some even calling him an American hero.

Wright says he suffered some smoke inhalation, but it was not a problem because he already had smoke in his lungs. He did not specify the source of the smoke.

ABC reported that the one family displaced by the fire was being assisted by the Red Cross.
