Surrey Buddhist temple prays for end to blackout after B.C. windstorm

WATCH: Canada’s largest Buddhist temple was still without power days after a massive windstorm swept through Metro Vancouver. Like the rest of us, the monks at the temple have had to scramble in the aftermath of the storm, but as Catherine Urquhart reports, they have one powerful weapon–patience.

Inside Canada’s largest Buddhist temple in Surrey, Deok Seong has been praying for power.

The soft-spoken South Korean monk says the Seokwang-sa Buddhist Temple has been without power since Saturday’s massive windstorm. He’s not quick to complain, but admits the last few days haven’t been easy.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Still, the blackout hasn’t stopped him from performing services.

“I can use a candle and I cannot use microphone and lights,” he said.

Seong said he had to throw away all the food stored in the temple’s refrigerators, a huge loss for him and his 1,000-strong congregation.

Still, he’s tried to be philosophical about the power outage.

“It’s challenging. It’s an adventure,” he said with a laugh.

Seong isn’t just relying on the power of prayer. In keeping with his beliefs, he lent a helping hand to BC Hydro crews in the area, offering them some Tim Hortons coffee and doughnuts.

Whether it was the prayers or the doughnuts, power was finally restored late Tuesday night.
