WATCH: A happy reunion tonight as a teenager who had been denied entry into Canada reunites with her mother. John Daly has the story.
Jazmine Talosig arrived in Vancouver from the Philippine capital of Manila this week, ending a three-year struggle to be reunited with her mother.
“Just after she came from Customs, you can see a smile on the face of both of us,” said Karen, with Jazmine at her side. “It was like, yes, this is it. The battle is over.”
Karen Talosig had been trying for years to bring Jazmine to B.C., but Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) told her the teenager was considered “medically inadmissible” because she is deaf.
A social media campaign spearheaded by Talosig’s former employer, along with support from the BC Provincial School for the Deaf, Education Minister Peter Fassbender and others, finally convinced the CIC that Jazmine would not be a burden on Canadian society.
Talosig says she plans to take Jazmine on a tour of the B.C. Provincial School for the Deaf, where she will be attending classes next month.
Jazmine is going into Grade 9 and she says she is looking forward to studying Canadian history.
But first, she’ll get a taste of B.C. geography when they visit Vancouver Island this weekend.
