Uber fires back at protesting taxis, offers free rides

MONTREAL – Uber Quebec has fired back at protesting taxi drivers Tuesday morning by offering two free $15 rides to every new user.

Users received an in-app notification with a promo code to pass on to their friends who have never used the service.

The company said it will also give an extra allowance to its Montreal drivers.

“In order to bring more Uber driver partners on the road on, we’ll be forgoing our commission so drivers can keep 100 per cent of all fares,” Jean-Christophe de Le Rue, spokesperson for Uber Canada, told Global News.

“We believe the right path forward is to work collaboratively with the government to develop regulations that embrace ride-sharing and we are pleased to see that Premier Couillard has shown openness towards innovation,” he added.

Montreal taxis had announced they would be increasing pressure tactics against UberX by blocking traffic and demanding that Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard protect the taxi industry against ride-sharing services.
