IHIT searching for suspect in Burnaby homicide

WATCH: A number of streets were closed off today as investigators took over the scene of a deadly shooting near Brentwood Town Center. Reporter Geoff Hastings explains why some residents thought what they heard was part of a movie shoot.

A 43-year-old man died of gunshot wounds in a targeted incident near Brentwood Park Elementary School on Wednesday morning.

Burnaby RCMP were called to the 4600-block of Midlawn Drive at 10:30 a.m. after a report of shots being fired and a man lying in the street. He later died of his injuries and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken over the investigation.

Police identified the wounded man as Igor Gradaric, who is known to police but is not believed to be connected to an on-going drug dispute under investigation by Surrey RCMP.

IHIT investigators are working with the RCMP to determine what happened leading up to the shooting of Bradaric. Mounties said  a 2005 grey Audi station wagon with out-of-province licence plates was seen leaving the area and a vehicle matching that description was recovered in Surrey.
