WINNIPEG – The city’s mosquito fogging trucks will be on the streets again this week, as warm and wet weather help breed more bugs.

City officials announced Wednesday that fogging will begin on Thursday at 9:30 p.m., weather permitting.

Recent rain in Saskatchewan means a resurgence of mosquitoes is possible, but the effect will be different compared to earlier this summer. File / Global News

“To date, the Insect Control Branch (ICB) has used a combination of larviciding and residual treatments to control mosquito populations. These measures alone are no longer sufficient to control the current adult nuisance mosquito population,” officials said.

The ‘Adulticiding Factor Analysis,” the city’s benchmark for measuring the nuisance mosquito problem, was at a “High” rating, with an average trap count of 77 city wide. But one trap in the Sturgeon Creek area, in the city’s northwest, counted 400 mosquitoes. A trap in Assiniboine Park showed 304 mosquitoes.

The city will announce at least 8 hours prior to fogging which areas will be treated Thursday night/Friday morning.
