LIST: Train accidents in Canada

TORONTO – On Feb. 26, a passenger train derailed in Burlington, Ont., killing three Via Rail employees and injuring dozens more.

The Misssissauga train derailment of November 1979 remains one of the largest peacetime, emergency evacuations of people in history. Though no one was killed when train cars carrying propane and chlorine derailed, over 250,000 people were evacuated.

1995 Russell Hill Subway Accident
The 1995 accident caused is the worst accident in Canadian history with three people being killed and approximately 30 taken to hospital after a subway train collided with another after crew members allegedly misread signals. The subway line was shut down for roughly five days as the investigation commenced.

February 26, 2012
Three people were killed after a train derailment in Burlington. Dozens of people were also trapped inside some of the overturned train cars.

On April 23, 1999, two people were killed and 36 injured when a passenger train, VIA Rail train #74, hit an open crossover switch, causing it to tip over where it collided with cars full of ammonium nitrate.

December 27, 1942
36 people were killed and over 200 injured when a passenger train was struck from behind by a train carrying Canadian soldiers.
