Gunfire injures two men outside southeast convenience store

CALGARY – Two men are recovering from gunshot wounds after being shot early Saturday morning.
Police are trying to piece together what happened in the southeast community of Douglasdale and looking for suspects.

Just a few hours after being shot, Derek Bennett was seen hobbling back to the scene to check on his vehicle which spent the night behind police tape.

Bennett seemed to be doing a lot better than the wallet he was carrying, which took some of the shotgun blast.

“I had a wallet in my pocket and it’s disintegrated. Completely destroyed. I haven’t slept in like 24 hours. Pretty tired,” said Bennett.

The incident started at around 1 a.m. Saturday morning.

Police responded to a call of people being shot.  One of the victims says it started with a argument between two groups in the parking lot of a small strip mall on Douglasdale Boulevard.

“It wasn’t even a fight, it was just a verbal disturbance. It was just me and my friends here and then he came up and started cussing us and stuff and I tried to split it up and told him to go their separate ways and then they came back 10 minutes later with a gun.”

According to Bennett, a man came back with a shotgun and went to the passenger side door of a truck that his friend was driving.   Bennett was sitting in the passenger’s seat and says things happened very quickly. Suddenly he was looking straight into the barrel of a shotgun.

“I just went to grab it. Grabbed it and it went off,” Bennett said. “As soon as I grabbed it and and pointed it down it went off  and shot me in the back of the leg and then went through the seat and shot my friend in the shin.”

The two men were taken to hospital and treated for minor gunshot injuries. Another man was assaulted with the gun.

The truck was taken away for evidence.  The whole ordeal has left those involved wondering how things could have escalated so fast and with such a dangerous result.

Police are investigating several leads and looking into whether a vehicle may have been involved.
