Federal Election 2015: Coquitlam-Port Coquitlam riding results

Summary: In an area held by retiring cabinet minister James Moore since 2000, Coquitlam-Port Coquitlam will elect an new MP in 2015. The man trying to keep the seat for the Conservatives is a provincial Liberal, Doug Horne, who has been the MLA for Coquitlam-Burke Mountain since 2009.

Boundaries: An urban seat in Metro Vancouver’s Tri-Cities region, Coquitlam-Port Coquitlam includes all of Port Coquitlam, and the northern, more suburban half of Coquitlam.

Last Election: James Moore was re-elected to a fifth term in the region, defeating NDP candidate Mark Ireland by 26 per cent. Within these new boundaries, 55.5 per cent of votes were for the Conservatives in 2011, and 31.0 per cent were for the NDP.

History: Port Moody-Coquitlam went NDP in 1988, but this area has elected right-wing candidates ever since in general elections. Provincially, Port Coquitlam typically has elected NDP candidates, but the northern, Coquitlam half of this riding heavily favours right-wing candidates.

Demographics: One of many ridings in Metro Vancouver’s suburbs full of younger families, just 10.2 per cent of people are seniors, the third lowest number in British Columbia. There are 1.2 children per family, the third highest number in the province.

Conservative: Doug Horne, Liberal MLA for Coquitlam-Burke Mountain since 2009

NDP: Sara Norman, a former radio journalist in Metro Vancouver
