REGINA  – Thunderstorm watches may bring extreme weather to Saskatchewan, but they’ve also brought some extreme weather watchers: storm chasers.

Environment Canada issued weather watches and warnings for most of southern Saskatchewan Monday, forecasting 50 to 80 mm of rainfall by Tuesday evening.

Storm chasers immediately started heading to Estevan.

Ricky Forbes is part of CMT’s Tornado Hunters, travelling with Greg Johnson.

“What we’re after are big storms, so a few days out we’re forecasting these storms and looking at models,” he said.  “Now that we’re here, we’re seeing these storms pop up. They are saying there will be three and half inch diameter hail, there’s going to be serious winds, super style thunderstorms that could possibly bring tornadoes.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

It took hours of waiting, but it seems the chasers were rewarded.

Forbes was recently tracking monsoons in Arizona, but says some of the best storms he’s caught on camera were in Saskatchewan.

“It’s exciting for storm chasers, but it’s not exciting for everyone else in the area. Either way, these storms are going to happen so we’re out here,” he added.  “We’re letting everyone know what to do if it comes your way.”

Storm chasers aren’t the only ones capturing amazing footage though. Weather specialists, and enthusiasts alike grabbed their cameras.
