Power out for 10 hours at Pioneer Village

REGINA – Pioneer Village and Pioneer Manor lost power Wednesday night due to a lightning strike.

The bolt of lightning hit a high voltage wire Wednesday afternoon causing a transformer to malfunction.

The long-term care facility was without power for over 10 hours, as crews worked to get everything back up and running.

The health region says emergency plans ensured that everyone received needed care, but the incident also provided a learning opportunity.

“Situations like this always bring us back to say, ‘what else could we do a little bit better?'”said Debbie Sinnett, the executive director of long-term care.”We certainly did identify a few different things in terms of some additional emergency supplies that we might require, some other resources that we want to contact that might be able to assist us.”

A temporary transformer has been put in place. There is no timeline on when a permanent one will be installed.
