Police step up summer CounterAttack campaign on land and water

Police are stepping up their summer CounterAttack campaign, looking for impaired drivers on both land and water.

RCMP were at Cates Park in North Vancouver Sunday to remind boaters to enjoy the water safely.

Staff Sgt. Paul Kelly of North Vancouver RCMP says alcohol and boating can be a dangerous combination.

“There’s the sun, the fatigue and the waves that always assist with increasing the symptoms of alcohol,” he said.

Last month, an Alberta firefighter died in a boating accident on Columbia Lake near the Fairmont Hot Springs. RCMP said they believed alcohol was a contributing factor.

CounterAttack road check campaign began earlier this month, as ICBC and police crews team up to ensure people aren’t drinking and driving.

According to the RCMP, each year an average of 86 people in B.C. are killed in impaired-related crashes on the road.
