Pan Am Games Day 5: Canadian rowers on golden waters

TORONTO – Team Canada continued to haul in medals on the water at the Pan Am Games on Wednesday, bringing in three golds and a silver on the final day of rowing competition.

The men’s lightweight four struck gold early at Royal Canadian Henley in St. Catharines, Ont., Wednesday, beating both the U.S. and Chile by more than four seconds.

Kingston, Ont., native Rob Gibson won silver in the men’s single sculls, finishing six-and-a-half seconds behind Angel Fournier of Cuba. Brian Rosso of Argentina took bronze.

Canada won its second rowing gold of the day after placing first in the women’s quadruple sculls event.

Canada crossed the finish line more than eight seconds ahead of the U.S. and more than 10 seconds ahead of third place Argentina.

“We’re all pretty excited. It’s been a long week,” Carling Zeeman said. “Just to finish on such a good note is a good feeling, so exhilarating.”

The men’s eight also struck gold in the final rowing event at the Pan Am Games. Canada reached the finish line more than three seconds faster than Argentina while the U.S. came in third.

“We were a little nervous especially with the pressure of the crowd,” Conlin McCabe said on winning men’s eight. “We had the best start…we were not going to let anyone row through us with this crowd right here.”

Canada’s rowers collected eight gold medals for the host nation, while Team Canada’s paddlers brought in three golds in canoe/kayak sprints.
