WATCH ABOVE: The Montreal firefighters union insist the city shouldn’t be allowed to host the Firefighter Games. Global’s Elysia Bryan-Baynes reports.
MONTREAL – Firefighters rained on Mayor Denis Coderre‘s parade Monday.
He was kicking off events for the World Firefighter Games that are being held in Montreal in 2017, but the city’s own firefighters aren’t thrilled with the idea.
“We don’t think the city of Montreal deserves to host the Games,” said Chris Ross with the Montreal Firefighters Union.
The union said it needs to first reach an agreement on pension reform.
Until then, they’re going to do everything they can to make sure the 2017 event is boycotted.
Every major department in the province has already agreed not to attend, as well as firefighters on federal military bases.
Ross said the next step is getting departments south of the border to support their cause.
“Lets be proud and lets not play politics,” responded Montreal mayor Denis Coderre.
Montreal’s union recently returned from the U.S., where the World Games were being held.
