TORONTO – Photography chain Blacks may be closing all of its retail stores next month, but the Canadian company will live on through its website and mobile app.
The company said Tuesday it has reached an agreement to sell its digital assets to photofinishing company Les Pros de la Photo. The website will still operate as Blacks.ca.
In June, parent company Telus announced all 59 Blacks retail locations would close on August 8, affecting about 485 employees, most of which work in Ontario.

As part of the agreement with Les Pros de la Photo, Blacks customers will still be able to use their Print+ and prints for Life cards online after Blacks stores have been closed.

The company also noted that some Blacks employees will be offered jobs as part of the acquisition.
The ownership change will take effect August 4.
Headquartered in Toronto, Blacks was founded in 1930 and sold appliances. Its first speciality camera store opened in 1948.
Since then, it has changed hands several times.
Telus Corp. bought Blacks in September 2009 for $28 million from ReichmannHauer Capital Partners, which had purchased the chain two years earlier for an undisclosed price.
In July 1993, Fuji Photo Film Canada purchased Blacks and its 210 stores for $65 million from Scott’s Hospitality, which was primarily a food business.
