WATCH: The city of Vaudreuil has been given the green light for a new, affordable housing project to help those on fixed incomes. Global’s Tim Sargeant reports.
VAUDREUIL-DORION – In and around Montreal, there is no shortage of new residential homes and commercial buildings under construction.
The City of Vaudreuil-Dorion is no different; it’s just added affordable housing to their list of growing expansion plans.
Forty-two new units in a three-storey building will be built on a commercial street just south of Highway 20.

The subsidized housing aims to help people who live on fixed incomes and can’t afford private dwellings.
“They want decent place to live and they want to pay a decent price too,” said Guy Pilon, Vaudreuil-Dorion mayor.
Rent will range between $600 and $900 a month – a big difference compared to the $1,000 plus a month in non-subsidized housing.
It’s also a stark contrast to the real estate boom the city has been experiencing in recent years.
“For the last 20 years, no one built apartment building,” said Pilon.
The proposed housing project is going up in an established neighbourhood that’s been around for decades.
People living nearby said they will welcome their new neighbours, but they are concerned about the possible increase in traffic flow.
“It’s always the same road we have. It’s a concern I think for everybody,” said Jean-Guy Sarrazin, a resident.
“It’s a piece of land that’s been free for a very long time and if somebody can have some use out of it I don’t have anything against that.”
Construction is expected to start in the fall and will finish by 2017.
