North Okanagan barn destroyed by flames

ARMSTRONG – The Armstrong-Spallumcheen Fire Department was called to a barn fire around 5:45 p.m. Wednesday but when they arrived the barn, containing hay, was already destroyed.

“It was completely destroyed before we even got on scene,” says fire chief Ian Cummings. “As soon as my page went off and I got in my truck I could see a huge plume of black smoke coming from the dairy barn. It’s probably eight or ten kilometers away so it was fully involved before [I] even left my house.”

Fire fighters were able to stop the flames from spreading to other structures on the dairy operation on Knob Hill Rd. No animals were housed in the barn and the dairy is still in operation today.

Cummings says crews were on scene until 3:30 a.m. Thursday morning putting water on the fire. A fire crew is expected to remain at the barn all day Thursday to monitor the site.

“You could have had sparks that went into the sawdust and into some of the manure piles that dried out and they could spark up. We are there to make sure the fire doesn’t go anywhere,” says Cummings.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation but Cummings says it isn’t suspicious. No one was injured in the fire.
