EDMONTON – Thousands of people took part in Canada Day festivities across the country and here in the Capital Region Wednesday.

Edmontonians were out and about showing their Canadian pride in a number of ways.

Along Saskatchewan Drive, Canadian flags hung from dozens of balconies. The woman behind the plan to “flag the towers” says it’s all about bringing the community together to celebrate the nation.

“I got to meet a lot of my neighbours and I found that gee, we have just wonderful people living in these towers,” said Denise Nobert. “It just really thrills me that my neighbours are so enthusiastic of my project.”

This is the second year Nobert handed out flags to her neighbours and says it’s a great way to show pride in your country.

“I think that Canada is one of the best countries in the world. We are so lucky to live here,” she said. “We’re fun-loving Canadians and I’m proud of that.”

QUIZ: How well do you know the nicknames for Canadian people, places?

Down at Fort Edmonton Park, dozens of new Canadians celebrated the nation’s birthday at a citizenship ceremony.

Matthew Christopher Lee, who will renounce his American citizenship later this month, says it’s an absolute honour to finally be able to call himself a Canadian.

“I met my wife at Disney Land several years ago and I decided to come up to Canada to visit and decided this was the place I wanted to live and eventually have a family, which I now have,” he said.

“It’s a very proud day for me, it really is. And to have it on Canada Day just means so much more.”
