How to celebrate Canada Day 2015 in and around Edmonton

WATCH ABOVE: Canada Day is being celebrated right across the country, as well as many communities in the greater Edmonton area. Michel Boyer breaks down what you need to know.

EDMONTON – Canada turns 148 glorious years young this July 1 and celebrations will be held across Edmonton and the surrounding areas.

Here’s a list of some of the festivities taking place:

Edmonton City Hall

Churchill Square will be bustling with activity beginning at noon on Canada Day. Free activities and entertainment will be held inside City Hall until 4 p.m.

Light the High Level Bridge

Edmonton’s picturesque High Level Bridge will be illuminated with light art created by Edmonton lighting designer Scott Peters and musician Jason Kodie at 11 p.m. The showcase will be accompanied by a soundscape of Edmonton music, which will be broadcast on CKUA radio.

Downtown Fireworks

The High Level light show will be topped off with a spectacular fireworks display over the River Valley. Here are some of the viewing locations suggested by the city:

  • Alberta Legislature Grounds
  • Victoria Park (River Valley Road)
  • Ezio Faraone Park (west entrance to High Level Bridge on 109 Street north)
  • Dantzer’s Hill (below Queen Elizabeth Park)
  • Government House Park (Groat Road & River Valley Road)
  • Telus Field

*Note: There will be no viewing from Kinsmen Park.

Alberta Legislature

Live entertainment and plenty of free family activities will be offered at the Alberta Legislature grounds on July 1. The festivities kick off at 10 a.m. and run until 7 p.m. There’s also something new to take in this year: the visitor centre on the main floor of the Edmonton Federal Building will be open to the public from 12:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m.

Mill Woods Park

Thousands of people descend on Mill Woods Park every Canada Day for one of the city’s largest events. Free family activities start at 1 p.m. Finish the day off with a bang by catching the dazzling fireworks display at 11 p.m.

Take in a baseball game

Why not catch a baseball game at Telus Field as the Edmonton Prospects take on the Weyburn Beavers. The game starts at 7:05 p.m. and Telus Field is offering a reduced admission of $4 per person after the 8th inning for those who wish to watch the downtown fireworks.

FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015 semi final match

With Edmonton playing host to the 2015 Women’s World Cup, you can spend Canada Day taking in a match at Commonwealth Stadium. The semi final game starts at 5 p.m. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.

Canada Day at the Edmonton Valley Zoo

From animals to red and white cupcakes, there is plenty to do at the zoo this Canada Day. Festivities are being held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Regular admission rates apply.

Canada Day at the Muttart Conservatory

The Muttart Conservatory will be hosting a Canada Day celebration of its own with live music, art and crafts and free face painting. The conservatory is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Regular admission rates apply.

Dominion Day at Fort Edmonton Park

You can celebrate Dominion Day the traditional way at Fort Edmonton Park with an authentic parade, toast to the Queen and other royal activities. The park is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Regular admission rates apply.

Take a splash in an outdoor pool

Soak up the sun at one of Edmonton’s many outdoor pools this July 1. Holiday hours are in effect and regular admission rates apply.

BBQ in Boyle McCauley

A community BBQ is being held at the Boyle Street Plaza, located at 9538 – 103A Avenue, from noon until 4 p.m.

Chinatown Night Market

From traditional entertainment to food trucks, celebrate Canada Day on Harbin Road with Chinatown’s Night Market. The event runs from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m.

Art Gallery of Alberta

The Art Gallery of Alberta is offering free admission on Canada Day. It’s open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with last admission at 4:30 p.m.

Canada Day in Strathcona County

Start the day off at 10 a.m. with the Chamber of Commerce Parade. More than 10,000 people are expected to take in the event through the heart of Sherwood Park.

An entertaining pyro-technical display choreographed to Canadian music will be on display over Broadmoor Lake to finish off Canada Day on a high note. The fireworks display starts at 11 p.m.

Canada Day in St. Albert

St. Albert parks, facilities and historical sites will be taken over with Canada Day fun. This year, the city is dedicating its Canada Day Celebration to the RCMP and all the work members do to keep the country safe.

From a pancake breakfast to live music, there are several ways to celebrate July 1 in St. Albert. The day finishes off with fireworks at Mission Park at 11 p.m.

Canada Day in Leduc

There will also be a number of ways to celebrate the nation’s birthday in Leduc. A pancake breakfast starts at 7:30 a.m., a parade will be held at noon along 50 Avenue, and wagon rides will be offered at 12:30 p.m. Evening events start at 5 p.m. in the northeast parking lot of the Leduc Recreation Centre. A fireworks display goes off at 11 p.m.

Canada Day in Fort Saskatchewan

A parade is also on the schedule in Fort Saskatchewan. It starts at 11 a.m., making its way through the community. Canada Day continues into the night and comes to a close with a fireworks display at 11 p.m.

Canada Day in Spruce Grove

For those who live west of Edmonton, a pancake breakfast, street performers and crafts are on the agenda for the celebration at Spruce Grove’s Jubilee Park. A fireworks display begins at 11 p.m.

Canada Day in Stony Plain
