SASKATOON – It was a bittersweet afternoon for friends and family of former Saskatchewan Huskie hockey star Cody Smuk. Hundreds of people filled Elim Church in Saskatoon on Tuesday to pay their respects to the athlete who passed away on June 25, following a brave battle against cancer.

Smuk played hockey with the Huskies team for four seasons, starting in 2010. He also played for four seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Moose Jaw Warriors, Lethbridge Hurricanes and Chilliwack Bruins.

He was diagnosed with testicular cancer and a mass in his lung in May 2014.

Smuk and his fiancée had only months ago been offered a dream wedding by a local wedding planner. Sadly, they did not have the chance to marry.

Smuk was only 26 and will be remembered fondly by his team, friends, family and community.
