SASKATOON – Former Saskatchewan Huskie hockey player Cody Smuk has lost his battle with cancer. Smuk was known as a warrior on the ice, but the biggest battles he fought were in hospitals.

Smuk was first diagnosed with testicular cancer and a mass in his lung in May 2014.

Months of chemotherapy proved ineffective, so on April 27 he flew to Germany to receive vaccine therapy.

Cody’s fiancée Stephanie Vause created a gofundme page to help raise money to cover the costs. Over $115,000 was donated, showing just how many people loved and cared for Smuk.

Smuk returned home from Germany earlier this month. He was just 26 when he lost his 13-month battle with cancer on June 25.
