Calgary on track to end homelessness

It appears Calgary’s ten year plan to end homelessness is working.

For the first time in twenty years, the number of people living on Calgary streets has decreased.

Officials released new numbers Monday morning, showing homelessness in the city is down by more than 11 per cent since 2008.

The goal is to eradicate homelessness by 2018.

The good news is, the city’s homeless are being taken off Calgary streets, but the bad news it’s a gradual process.

Officials say they’ve housed about 3,500 people since the program began just over four years ago.

Ending homelessness will still be a tough to goal to achieve.

Calgary has the highest homeless population in the province.

Over 63% of Alberta’s homeless are here, compared to just 28% in Edmonton.
