MONTREAL – A motorcyclist is dead after hitting a concrete wall and plummeting off the Champlain bridge.
The incident happened around 9:40 p.m. on Friday.
“The motorcyclist was going on Champlain northbound and hit a concrete wall at the start of the bridge on the Brossard side,” said Ronald McInnis with the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).
Firefighters were called to the scene because the bike was found – but no rider.
“We think that the man or woman was ejected from the motorcycle and fell down the bridge,” said McInnis.
“It took firefighters less than one hour to find the body.”
Police have not yet identified the victim but say he is a young man in his twenties who hails from Pierrefonds.
When asked about motorcycle safety on Quebec roads, Quebec’s transport minister Robert Poeti told Global News that the issue wasn’t so much about the roads as it was about the drivers.
The SQ confirmed that speed was a factor in the accident.
