Kelowna fire crews rescue baby and young child locked inside car

KELOWNA — Kelowna fire crews were called into action late Friday morning to rescue a two month old baby and young child locked inside a vehicle in the lower Mission area.

The children’s mother stepped out of the car, accidentally leaving her keys inside.

“When the lady left her car the automatic key fob locked her car with the keys in it,” says fire captain Allan Lipkovits. “She tried everything she could to open it. Obviously she couldn’t, so she called 911.”

Emergency crews called in a tow truck to unlock the vehicle, but with the temperature already nearing the 30 degree mark, firefighters couldn’t wait.

“The kids were sweating, not moving, so we broke a window and got the children out,” says Lipkovits.

The kids were trapped inside the vehicle for 11 or 12 minutes before being rescued. BC Ambulance was called in to look over the children, but there are no reports of serious injuries.
