Mounties probe separate security breaches at Kamloops correctional centre

KAMLOOPS, B.C. – Mounties are investigating two security breaches at Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre, the maximum security prison in B.C.’s southern Interior.

In December, a nearly-three-metre chain link fence was scaled and a hole was drilled in the window of a cell in the special handling unit, where segregated prisoners are held.

The second incident occurred in the last week of January when a laser was used to drill a hole in the window of another cell in the special handling unit.

B.C. Corrections spokesman Jess Gunnarson says there was no attempt to escape in either case.

But the union representing jail guards says anything could have been smuggled into the prison.

B.C. Government and Service Employees Union spokesman Dean Purdy says breaches don’t appear to be a problem at the other five maximum security prisons around the province and the issue at the Kamloops facility must be addressed quickly. (CFJC)
