Duplexes badly damaged in Cochrane fire

WATCH ABOVE: Four families have been forced out of their homes as a result of an early morning fire in Cochrane. As David Boushy reports, off-duty firefighters were instrumental in making sure everybody got out safely.

CALGARY – Two duplexes in the town of Cochrane were damaged by a fire on Monday.

The blaze broke out in a home on Sunrise View around 2 a.m., and was first spotted by two off-duty firefighters who began going door-to-door to alert neighbours.

“I don’t remember too much,” says victim Kerrie McNally. “I just grabbed my daughter, and our dog and got out of the house.”

“We’re now taking steps with Cochrane Victim Services and the Canadian Red Cross to get those people into some temporary places to stay,” said Cochrane Fire Chief David Humphries.

One of the units involved in the fire is home to a couple currently on vacation in Toronto. Family member Allan Prynak says they’re be cutting their vacation short to fly home.

“I think they’re still in a state of shock,” says Prynak. “They’ll be worse when they get a look at what it looks like.”

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
