It’s official: MUHC cuts the ribbon on Glen site

WATCH ABOVE: The MUHC kicked of a weekend of activities on Saturday morning with an  inaugural walk and ribbon cutting ceremony, marking the official opening of the new hospital. Billy Shields reports.

MONTREAL – After 25 years of planning, officials cut the ribbon opening the so-called Superhospital of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC).

The $1.3 billion hospital has been in the planning stages for 25 years, and the transfer of the five member facilities was the largest transfer in North America.

For McGill Principal Suzanne Fortier, it’s the end of a long journey. “You’ve got to have the determination to say we’re going to get there,” she said.

Construction on the Superhospital started in 2010. The technology alone inside cost $255 million.

The ribbon-cutting followed a march from Dawson College to the Glen site, a potent symbol of the importance that member hospitals had for Montrealers.

While some participants in the walk worked at the feeder hospitals, many had spent time there waiting for births or visiting loved ones.

“This is a great day for all Montrealers,” said Mayor Denis Coderre.

More events celebrating the Superhospital’s opening are scheduled to continue Sunday.
