Aggressive response to prevent spread of fire in Naramata

NARAMATA — Fire crews are working on containing a fire on Naramata Creek Forest Service Road. Fire Information Officer Kelsey Winter says 10 firefighters, an excavator as well as a water tanker responded to the blaze on Friday afternoon.

“The reason we are responding so aggressively is because it’s in a burn pile, there is a lot of fuel and wind in the area,” explains Winter. “They’ll blanket the fire so it can’t go anywhere.”

Cameron Bond was on the patio of the Local Lounge and Grille restaurant in Summerland when he heard a water bomber fly overhead around 3 p.m.

“You could see smoke from across the lake,” says Bond. “There was retardant being dropped from the water bomber.”

Winter reminds residents that any open burning larger than 0.5 metres by 0.5 metres is prohibited.

“A word of caution for people to remember how dry fuels are this time of year, we haven’t gotten as much rain as we normally receive in June either,” says Winter.

She says the cause of the fire is still under investigation but it does appear to be human caused.
