REGINA – The queen city is set to host the best young baseball talent in August, and two local players are looking to crack one of the two Saskatchewan teams
The under 21 national championships will be played in Regina from August 13 – 17.
The province will be looking at improving on a one-win performance at last year’s event in Nova Scotia.
Jordon Dezotell played on the team last year, and is excited about the possibility of playing in front of a home crowd.
“It’s awesome. It’s always a good time playing in Saskatchewan. You get bigger crowds, and everyone’s on your side. It’s a lot more fun,” said Dezotell.
Despite the team not finishing well, the experience was a good one.
“It was awesome our team had a good time,” recalled Dezotell. “We probably didn’t bring the right team, but we had a good time. It’s actually a great tournament and a lot of great talent there.”
Conner Loeppky was unable to play in the tournament last year due to his schooling in California, where he also plays baseball. This tournament offers a chance to finally represent Saskatchewan.
“It was disappointing. I mean we had a good season and I would’ve really liked to go represent Regina at that tournament, but then again I have to go to school,” said Loeppky
“It’d mean a lot to me personally because I haven’t gotten to represent last year, so this year I’m hoping to go and show them what I got.”
What sort of challenges can other teams expect when they make the travel to Regina?
“Definitely the weather. The weather here is very unpredictable,” said Loeppky
These two baseballs players hope to shine as bright as the weather they are hoping for, and look to be a hit among Regina’s baseball fans.
Tickets for the event go on sale June 15.
