Honda Indy race will slow Toronto drivers this weekend

WATCH ABOVE: It’s race day here in Toronto. And while there were no Canadians taking part in this year’s race. The home grown content was still front and centre. Cindy Pom reports.

TORONTO – Start your engines.

The Honda Indy Toronto is this weekend.

But for Toronto drivers, it’s more like stop your engines.

The event starts Friday and runs till Sunday.

The road closures began on Wednesday and will last through to Sunday.

Lake Shore Blvd. W. From Strachan Ave. to British Columbia Dr. is closed and is scheduled to reopen Sunday at 11 p.m.

Police say drivers should expect significant delays.

While there will be some slowdowns outside the track, the three day event promises a good time.

Hometown hero James Hinchcliffe will serve as the grand marshal for the race on Sunday.

The Oakville native was seriously injured during a practice for the Indianapolis 500 but was given the okay by doctor to fly into town for the event.

Friday is “Fan Friday” and admission for visitors is covered, in exchange for a donation the the Make-A-Wish foundation.

There will be qualifying runs, off-track stunt shows, and family activities like a hockey slap shot zone, face painting, and racing simulators.

And then it’s on to the qualifying sessions, various series races and the 85-lap classic Sunday afternoon.
